Young Adults and Youth at the Oratory

When we learn about the Life of St Philip, something that stands out was his concern for aiding young people in holiness. St Philip realised how important it is to help young people to grow in their faith and virtue while they are still young! Often Philip could be found gathering young men to play sport together, keeping them out of mischief, or leading young people on pilgrimages and engaging them in spiritual conversations. Wherever he went people flocked to him. Here at the Brisbane Oratory, we have several groups and events for young men, young women, and youth. In this months Newsletter, Fr Andrew gave an update on these groups.
Our Frassati fraternity for young men has seen a change of leader in the last two months, as Dylan Shogren has now joined the new traditional Benedictine foundation of monks in Tasmania as an Aspirant. Dylan has been succeeded by

A New Novice for the Brisbane Oratory

During the Octave of Pentecost and the evening before St Philip’s day, we joyfully received a new member into our congregation!
Hung Nguyen, originally from Adelaide and more recently from Melbourne, has been an enquirer to our community for some time.  In recent months he has been in residence with us in Brisbane.  Following his formal application to join we happily received him as a novice. In many Oratories, some members decide to take new names and in order to mark this change in his life, Hung asked to receive a new name and was given the name John Henry.
After the formal vote to accept the new candidate, Hung was presented to the moderator and community in our chapel. After a prayer to St Philip Neri, the candidate formally asks to join the congregation and states his intention to cultivate the spirit of our congregation. After singing the Veni Creator, each

Mass and Supper on St Philip’s Day

On the 26th of May 2018 the Brisbane Oratory celebrated St. Philip Neri’s feast day with a Solemn High Mass. The feast day of the Oratory’s holy founder carries an extra significance for our community as it is also the anniversary of our establishment by Archbishop Mark Coleridge on May 26th 2015. The third anniversary of our Oratorian community is a milestone of great importance in our very short but blessed history. Once an Oratory has been established for three years it is free to begin petitioning the Holy See to seek pontifical status. The celebration of the third anniversary is a strong testament to the community’s ability to live and thrive in the place in which has been planted. The occasion was a fitting opportunity to give thanks to God along with all our faithful and supporters for all His graces that have guided us to this significant moment.

In mid-May the Brothers of our Oratory will begin returning home for the mid-year break from their studies. The first to arrive back will be Brothers Conor and Matthew, who will have finished their philosophy studies in Toronto.  Brothers Shawn and Tyson will follow in subsequent weeks.  The full community will be home, then, for the next major celebration which will see Archbishop Coleridge visit us to celebrate the 7:00pm Mass on Monday 9 July, during which he will institute Brothers Tyson, Conor and Matthew as Acolytes.  Again, you are warmly invited to this celebration, which will take place in the Ordinary form.

Musical Oratory: The Seven Last Words

Sunday 25 March at 3:00pm, Mary Immaculate Church, 616 Ipswich Rd, Annerley.

Musical Oratory is an inspiration from St Philip Neri, who sought to use music to help encourage devotion and prayer. This lent, we would like to invite you to a special Musical Oratory featuring Haydn’s Seven Words of Christ, a string quartet based on the seven last words of Christ spoken from the Cross, which have been a Catholic devotion for centuries.
The composer Haydn was commisioned in 1786 to produce this musical piece for Good Friday devotions for the Holy Cave Oratory in Spain. This piece of music contains seven movements based on the seven words of Christ spoken from the cross, and traditionally each movement was preceded by a brief meditation. Restored to its original setting, we will intersperse the piece with brief meditations on these words of Christ.
This is a good way to prepare for those final days of

Big events happening at the Brisbane Oratory in 2018

Saturday May 26th this year will see the third anniversary of our establishment as an Oratorian community-in-formation by Archbishop Coleridge.  We will celebrate this day, Saint Philip Neri’s feast day, with a Solemn High Mass at 7:00pm that evening (following the usual 5:30pm Mass), followed by a celebratory supper in the hall afterwards.  Please mark your calendar!  After May 26th, we will have therefore completed the minimum three years that a community must spend “in formation”, and we hope then to prepare our formal petition for establishment as a Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri to be sent to the Holy See.  We will keep you informed as things progress.
We rejoice that the Brothers continue to make good progress towards their eventual, please God, ordination to the Priesthood.  As a further step towards this, Brothers Tyson, Conor and Matthew will be instituted as Acolytes during Mass celebrated by
