Moped madness, Riverside

In the past five weeks, 26 motorcycles have been stolen in the Riverside Patrol area which covers Annerley, West End, Cannon Hill and all the suburbs in between.
Of those 26 motorcycles stolen 13 were located. For those that are good with math, that’s a 50% recovery rate. This sounds good until you realise that most of the bikes are damaged to a certain extent.
Of the 26 motorcycles 12 of the them are mopeds. Most of the motorcycles recovered are also mopeds suggesting  mopeds are stolen from convenience more than anything else.
The ease at which they are stolen may be because people are less inclined to put a wheel lock or ignition lock thinking they are just a cheaper alternative.
Moped riders enjoy relatively low cost transport but factor in the cost of repairs after the mopeds are located and any savings you may have had are gone.

Crime prevention tips for Dutton Park and South Brisbane residents

In the coming months police will be rolling out a social media campaign to promote personal and community safety.
Police continue to monitor and regularly patrol Dutton Park and South Brisbane to ensure the safety of the community.
Being aware of your surroundings is a big part of ensuring personal safety when you are travelling by foot through Dutton Park and South Brisbane.
Opportunistic thieves have demonstrated a propensity to target pedestrians using handheld electronic devices.
This is because our ability and preparedness to respond to potential danger is reduced when listening to music or looking down at our phones.
Police would like the community to include these safety tips to their routines to improve their overall safety:

Avoid low lit and secluded areas that make you feel unsafe whenever possible;
Where possible let someone know where you are headed if you’re moving about alone;

Senior Sergeant Marilyn Jackson, Officer in Charge Morningside Station would like to remind road users that a ‘hit and run traffic crash’ refers to any motor vehicle crash where one driver leaves the scene without exchanging details or checking to see if everyone involved is okay.
A hit and run traffic crash also includes when someone hits your parked car and doesn’t leave their details.
Morningside Police are urging drivers to exchange details when involved in a traffic crash and if you hit a parked car, leave your details where the other driver can see them.
If our investigations reveal that you failed to provide your personal particulars at the scene of a crash, you can be issued a Traffic Infringement Notice under s93 Transport Operations
