With Christmas and the holiday period fast approaching, we may look around our homes and gardens and notice some areas that could do with some sprucing up!
Maybe you’ve just received a flyer or magnet in your mail box for a service that you just need right now!
Unfortunately, in this day and age, not everyone is legitimate and so when you receive these items in your mail box, just do a couple of quick checks to ensure you will be dealing with a legitimate, qualified and licensed trade person.
You can check a contractor has a current licence by logging onto the Queensland Building and Construction Commission website (QBCC). This site is a great way to find out if you are dealing with a licenced builder and whether or not that builder/contractor has had any recent breaches or fines.
If you are not looking for a builder, you can also check out credentials

South Brisbane’s junior police give back to the community
On Friday November 23, a group of officers from the South Brisbane District came together and took up the challenge to give back to the community through the annual QPS Commissioners Gift Drive.
For the past 26 years, the QPS has come together at Christmas time to donate new toys for children who are at-risk or disadvantaged over the holiday period.
Officers from South Brisbane took the opportunity to show their children what giving back looks like, and brought their kids along, kitted out in their junior police officers.
The kids were greeted by the Commissioner and the Honourable Mark Ryan, Minister for Police, at Police Headquarters, before making their way to the hand-made sleigh where they were able to drop off their gifts for children in need.
Thank you to all officers from South Brisbane who took time out of their days to ensure their community has a merry Christmas.

Dressed to impress: Police donate their uniforms
It’s amazing what can be achieved when people come together to help one another.
As officers of the Queensland Police Service, we serve with honour and for one particular initiative, have literally given the shirts off our backs to help those in need.
The initiative – Uniform 4 Kids which kicked off earlier this year, allowed our officers from all 22 stations in the South Brisbane District to donate their unwanted uniforms to be transformed by extremely talented individuals into unique items for young disadvantaged children.

ATO scam alert for Centenary
An Australian Tax Office (ATO) phishing scam is once again making its rounds in the Centenary Policing division.
Recently a local grocery manager saved a 65-year-old woman from being scammed.
The woman was contacted by a man stating that he was from the ATO. He told her that she had a significant debt that, if left unpaid, would land her in jail. In order to pay off this debt she had to purchase $3000 in iTunes cards.
Two days previously a 35-year-old man attended Calamvale station with a similar story, the threat of going to jail encouraged this man to give the scammer his name, address and banking details.
The ATO website has details of many scams which use the ATO identifiers.
The number one rule to avoid scams is – if someone rings you and you do not know definitively who they are do not provide any personal information.
