Operation Wake Up – phase one wrap up

Operation Wake Up is approaching its third and final month of operation.
Phase one of the operation (November/December 2018) saw the following stats recorded across South Brisbane District.
These stats were taken from the eight operations across the district which involved 173 officers and 1073 extra operational police hours on our roads.

South Brisbane Police have been pleased to see a decrease in traffic crashes causing injury within the district since the operation commenced in November.
The operation also aims at putting a strong policing presence in area’s where crimes have been occurring, this has resulted in a steady drop in crime compared to the same time over previous years.
Phase one also included education programs in schools aimed at stopping young drivers from being the next fatality statistic.

Armed robbery charges, Belmont

Detectives have charged a man following an alleged armed robbery incident at Belmont on December 18.
It is alleged at 4am, two men armed with a knife entered a licensed premises on Belmont Road and threatened two staff members before tying them up.
It is further alleged the men stole a sum of money and other items of property prior to fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
The vehicle is described as being a white 2006, Toyota Camry sedan with Queensland registration 026LVE.
The vehicle was located on December 23 at Ningi.
No one was physically injured during this incident.
Police are seeking dash cam vision from members of the public who may have been in the area at the time.
A 25-year-old Hemmant man is charged with two counts each of deprivation of liberty and armed robbery. The man is also charged with one count each of enter premises with intent, receiving tainted property, stealing, unlawful

Large well behaved crowds in Brisbane welcome in 2019

Revellers across Queensland were well behaved as the state welcomed 2019.
Whilst police across Queensland reported a busy night as people farewelled one year and welcomed another, revellers at major events throughout the state were mostly well behaved.
There were few policing incidents in the Brisbane area, especially considering the large crowds that gathered at numerous vantage points across the city.
The early fireworks at 8.30am saw large numbers at Southbank with families out in force to enjoy the festivities.
The large crowds viewing the midnight fireworks at Southbank, Fortitude Valley and the City were well behaved and dispersed quickly following the fireworks.
Across Brisbane City, Fortitude Valley and South Brisbane areas police charged 60 people on 60 charges for mostly anti-social or alcohol related incidents.

Final check of schools for 2018

Although schools have their own security measures in place, police often call on residents and community members who might have witnessed offenders and are able to provide descriptions or vehicle details.

New Year’s Eve 2018 – Brisbane CBD, Fortitude Valley and Southbank areas

With large crowds expected to celebrate the New Year in Brisbane police are urging revellers to use common sense and ensure their celebrations remain safe and enjoyable.
Brisbane NYE commander Chief Superintendent Cameron Harsley said people throughout Queensland enjoy seeing the ‘new year in’ with tens of thousands of people heading to entertainment precincts throughout the state, with the Brisbane CBD, Fortitude Valley and South Bank areas popular locations.
“NYE is a great night, a time to celebrate with family and friends but poor decisions can have dire and lifelong consequences.
“The key to a great New Year’s Eve is to plan ahead – this includes thinking about how much alcohol you’re going to drink and how you’re getting home,” he said.
“Of course, if you’re going to drink, don’t get behind the wheel. Use public transport, or ride sharing services where possible or plan a “lift legend” designated driver.

Fatal traffic crash, Woolloongabba

Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash at the intersection of Deshon Stree and Longlands Street, Woolloongabba.
A car was being driven west along Deshon Street when it performed a right-hand turn.
A 51-year-old motorcycle rider was travelling in the opposite direction when the two vehicles have collided.
The motorcycle rider passed away as a result of his injuries at the scene.
The 27-year-old man driving the car was un-harmed as a result of the crash.
The Forensic Crash Unit investigation is continuing.

Multiple robbery offences, South Brisbane District

Detectives are investigating after a number of people were robbed and sustained injures overnight in the South Brisbane area.
Officers were called to Comer Street at 9.55pm following reports that a woman was walking in a car park and was assaulted by a man and had her handbag stolen.
Police attended the scene and the woman was transported to hospital for treatment of an injury to her shoulder.
Shortly after, at 10.30pm, officers were called to Valhalla Street in Sunnybank after a woman was pushed to the ground and had her handbag stolen.
She was transported to hospital for treatment of a possible fracture to her wrist and abrasions.
Officers were then called to a third incident that occurred at approximately 10:40pm pm on Turton Street in Sunnybank where another woman had her handbag stolen and received minor injuries during the incident.

Armed robbery, Sunnybank Hills

Detectives are investigating after a service station was robbed at Sunnybank Hills this morning.
Shortly before 4am, a man entered a Pinelands Road service station and produced a knife before demanding money and cigarettes.
The staff member complied and the man fled the business on foot with a sum of cash and cigarettes.
A second person was also inside the business at the time.
No one was injured during the incident.
The man is described as Caucasian, approximately 172cm tall, last seen wearing black shorts and a black hoodie.
Investigations are continuing.

Attempted armed robbery, Alderley

Detectives have released vision of a man that may be able to assist after a woman was seriously assaulted in Alderley on Monday, December 24.
At 6.15pm a 19-year-old woman stopped her car outside a residence in Goskar Avenue in Alderley.
A black Mazda CX5 then stopped near her and a man got out of the passenger door and demanded her car keys. The woman refused, and the man hit her in the face with the butt of a gun.
The woman’s father came out from the house and told the man to leave. The man then threatened him with what is believed to be a rifle.
The driver of the Mazda CX5 then reversed into the father causing him to fall to the ground.
The man then got back into the CX5 and it drove off.  The man is not known to the woman.
The woman was transported to the Wesley Hospital where she remains

Man charged with multiple vehicle thefts across Queensland

Police have charged a 30-year-old man following investigations into a string of offences including car thefts, traffic crashes and property crime spanning from Cairns to Brisbane in the past two weeks.
It will be alleged between December 12 and 22, the Edmonton man stole multiple vehicles and petrol and was involved in four traffic crashes in Cairns, Brisbane, Wide Bay, Gladstone and Rockhampton.
It will be further alleged, on December 21, one of the stolen vehicles was involved in a serious traffic crash with a motorcycle on Gin Gin Road in Bundaberg. The driver fled the scene. The 65-year-old male motorcycle rider was trasnported to Bundaberg Base Hospital with life threatening head injuries and multiple broken ribs and a punctured lung.
Police arrested the man on December 22 after he allegedly broke into a house and attempted to steal a vehicle at a property at Canoona, north of Rockhampton.
