Armed robbery, Capalaba

Detectives are investigating the armed robbery of a business in Capalaba overnight.
Around 10.51pm two men, with their faces covered, entered the Redland Bay Road store and demanded cash from an employee.
One of the men was armed with a knife while the other man took the money from the staff member.
The pair then fled the store.
No one was injured during the incident.

Break and enters in multi-storey residential apartments, South Brisbane

If you think living in a multi-storey residential apartment means break-ins aren’t possible … think again.
There has been an increase of burglaries in the South Brisbane area over the last few weeks.
Entry is being gained after climbing several stories, or drain pipes, and entering via unsecured balcony doors and windows. On some occasions, minimal force has been used to remove fly screens and once inside, easy to conceal items such as wallets, jewellery, car keys, laptops, iPads, phones and cash have been stolen.
Local police are encouraging all residents to assess their home security prior to leaving the home and going to bed, and have provided the following home security tips:

Keep your balcony screens locked at all times, including at night;
Fit deadlocks on doors and window screen locks to your windows;
Use keys to lock your windows and doors;
Do not leave any keys in security locks on your windows or doors;

Upper Mount Gravatt is Looking to the Stars

On Monday May 13, Upper Mount Gravatt Police Station became the latest station to be adorned with the Look tot he Stars artwork and acknowledgement plaque.
As part of a unique morning tea, local officers were joined by Indigenous Elders to unveil the special plaque which plays homage to the history and contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Peoples in the community, as well as recognising the vital work they do in keeping communities safe.

As master of ceremonies, Inspector Mark Stewart kept all entertained and we all enjoyed a screening of the Look to the Stars story on video as well as a special Didgeridoo performance from Mr Ian Strudwick from the Queensland Police Pipes and Drums band.
Opening up the ceremony was Uncle Sam Watson. In his Welcome to Country, Uncle Sam said he was proud of how relations between local Indigenous communities and local officers.

Update 3: Fatal traffic crash, Windsor

Police have charged a man following the investigation of a fatal traffic crash at Windsor on the night of May 18.
It will be alleged shortly before midnight a black BMW SUV was travelling northbound on Lutwyche Road when it collided with a moped heading north that was being ridden by a 32-year-old man from East Brisbane.
The BMW then veered into the southbound lanes and collided with a Subaru sedan driven by a 23-year-old Acacia Ridge man before also colliding with a Jeep.
The BMW came to rest on its roof in the southbound lanes.
The man on the moped and the driver of the Subaru both died at the scene.
Today a 37-year-old Burpengary man has been charged with two counts of manslaughter and one of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm (excessive speed and fail to remain scene).
He will appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today, May 23.

Update 2: Appeal for witnesses / dashcam vision: Fatal traffic crash, Windsor

Investigators have released vision of a black BMW SUV involved in a fatal traffic crash at Windsor on the weekend as they continue to appeal for information.
The vehicle is captured on CCTV travelling on Makerston Street towards Roma Street in Brisbane City around 11.51pm.
A short time later the black 2007 BMW SUV was travelling northbound on Lutwyche Road when it collided with a moped travelling north being ridden by a 32-year-old man from East Brisbane.

Changing perspectives on property crime – vehicle security

Most car thefts, and theft from cars, are opportunistic in nature however, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of having your car stolen or broken into.

Police launch new crime prevention campaign

The Queensland Police Service today launched a new crime prevention campaign, aimed at changing Queenslander’s perspectives towards property crime.
This new campaign uses mixed media including the 360° format and flyers on social media to put users in a criminal’s perspective and point out every day behaviours which can increase the likelihood of Queenslanders falling victim to opportunistic crime.
Acting Inspector Joanna Stone, Manager of Crime Prevention Programs Unit said crime prevention was every Queenslander’s responsibility and campaigns such as this, allowed the QPS to educate around crime prevention habits.
“Police across the state have crime prevention at the forefront of their minds every day when interacting with Queenslanders,” Acting Inspector Stone said.

A defining day for North Stradbroke Island

This morning Tuesday May 21, officers from across South Brisbane joined together with Senior Constable Jai Taylor from Dunwich Police Station to unveil a Look to the Stars acknowledgement plaque.
Look to the Stars is an important piece of QPS history and in the spirit of reconciliation, adorns uniforms and other materials alike.
The ceremony was held at Dunwich State School, symbolic of a meeting between local Indigenous communities who reside on the island.
As Adopt-a-Cop for the school, and master of ceremonies, Senior Constable Taylor said today’s event was symbolic of reconciliation and also for the emerging community leaders present.
In her Welcome to Country, Aunty Maree Goebel said she was proud of how relations on the island have grown.
Acknowledging the past, Aunty Maree said the Look to the Stars artwork and its guiding principles offer a way forward for community members and police alike.

Ashes and war medals stolen, Sherwood

Police are investigating after an opportunistic thief broke into the home of a Sherwood couple last week and stole an urn containing their daughter’s ashes as well as World War II medals awarded to a late family member.
On May 19 a person entered the Magazine Street residence while a 72-year-old woman slept inside and searched through a bedroom, removing her handbag and some jewellery as well as the urn and medals.
The urn (similar to pictured) is a rosewood polished box around 30 centimetres long and 20 centimetres wide and contains the ashes of the residents’ daughter who passed away at the age of 17.
The war medals (similar to pictured) were awarded the 72-year-old male resident’s late father, A.N.PALMER from the 2/7th Battalion for services in the Middle East and New Guinea during World War II.
The victims have been left devastated by the loss and police are appealing to the conscience

Enter with intent – Mount Cotton, Ormeau and Holmview

Police investigations are underway after two stolen vehicles from Carina were used during break-ins at three separate businesses at Mount Cotton, Ormeau and Holmview overnight.
Around 1.05am, a grey 2014 Mitsubishi Pajero bearing Queensland registration “043 VHN” and a white 2016 Hyundai i30 hatchback bearing Queensland registration “653 XIR”, with a logo on the driver’s side door that reads “Story House Early Learning”, attended a supermarket on Valley Way at Mount Cotton.
The Pajero was used to force entry through the front glass doors of a supermarket while the Hyundai was used as a ‘lookout’ vehicle.
Three male offenders exited the vehicles to enter the store, whilst one remained in the Hyundai.
However, the three males ran back to the vehicles upon realising an employee was inside the store the both cars fled the scene.
Around 1.30am, both vehicles attended a supermarket on Peachey Road at Ormeau, where the Pajero was used to force entry
