Police Liaison Officers joined their counterparts from across the South Brisbane Police District to celebrate the end of Ramadan 2019 at the Islamic College of Brisbane, Karawatha, last week.

Despite the very brisk weather on the day, thousands of locals congregated at the iconic school to pray and officially celebrate the end of this auspicious time in the Islamic calendar.
Officers under the guidance of Acting Superintendent Tim Partrige and Officer in Charge of Calamvale Station, Senior Sergeant Stephen Gough, helped coordinate the safety of all attendees and assisted with the flow of traffic from the Compton and Acacia Road.
Haj. Sultan Deen, Chair of the Muslim Queensland Police Reference Group, said it was fantastic to see the police lending their support to help the community during the special occasion.

Police Liaison Officers from across the South Brisbane District had the privilege to attend a special community event at West End’s iconic Jagera Arts Centre, last week.

Celebrations continued throughout the afternoon with an array of cultural performances, traditional dances, guest speakers, delicious tucker and wonderful company.
The annual event acknowledges, celebrates and pays tribute to Eddie Mabo and the landmark High Court decision which legally recognised that Indigenous people had a special relationship to the land and sea that existed prior to colonisation.
The theme for this year’s gathering was voice, treaty and truth.
Senior Police Liaison Officer Doug Peachy said the event highlights how far we have come as a nation.
“We as officers recognise and acknowledge the great work being done to foster reconciliation by the community and are honoured to be here today,” Senior PLO Peachy said.
Many thanks to the community for allowing us to mix and mingle throughout the day.

Recently, I was given the honour of being awarded a Queensland Day award in the category of ‘sports in the community’, for my work in the two annual parkrun events I run in South Brisbane.
This nomination was a complete surprise and I was truly blown away.
Held annually and in conjunction with State Member for Mansfield, Ms Corrine McMillan MP and Macgregor ward Councillor Steven Huang, the celebrations and awards form part of Club Southside’s Queensland Day recognition for members of the community who have achieved beneficial results with projects or ongoing community services.

Each year, I organise two parkrun events, one in Mansfield (Cops n’ Robbers) and one in Wishart (Emergency Services event), highlighting issues within police such as Post Traumatic Stress, and other mental ill-health issues.

On Thursday, June 6, Ms Evelyn Esposito (formerly Mocker) was awarded the Queensland Police Service Medal as a sign of appreciation for her dedicated service.
The Queensland Police Service Medal is an award approved by the Commissioner and is presented to QPS members who have served 10 years of full-time qualifying service, in recognition of diligent and ethical service.
Ms Esposito left the Service in 1977 after serving in Toowoomba, the Commissioner’s Office and Brisbane City.
Inspector Tony Ridge presented the award at Coorparoo Station to the very appreciative former officer.
Ms Esponsito’s service came at a time when there were less than 300 female Queensland Police officers and only one female Detective.
Congratulations to Evelyn and thank you for your service.

Detectives from the Centenary Crime Group and Acacia Ridge Criminal Investigation Branch have charged two people with more than 50 offences after police allegedly located stolen property worth approximately $70,000 yesterday.
Detectives investigating recent break-ins involving the alleged theft of electrical cabling and other metals, as well as construction and industrial equipment, executed a search warrant at Katandra Crescent, Bellbird Park yesterday morning.
Police will allege the search uncovered approximately $70,000 worth of stolen property, including mobile phones valued at around $40,000.
Police also seized a homemade firearm and ammunition, drug items, a bathtub, a sink, industrial welders, industrial tools and a significant industrial copper cabling.
Some of the cabling has been linked to an alleged theft that occurred in Coopers Plains in the early hours of May 31.
The phones were allegedly stolen when a flatbed truck was reversed into an Ipswich Road, Oxley department store at around 10.20pm on Wednesday, June 5.

Showing off their koalifications
What are your koalafications?
Holland Park officers, Constable Bray and Constable Finegan, were leaving the station to attend a call for service, when they located a young koala sitting in the middle of the southbound lanes of Logan Road.
Hoping the little cutie hadn’t been hit by a car, they stopped, activated their lights and investigated.
The officers assisted the young koala off the road where she then decided to try and scale a telegraph pole.
Constable Finegan jumped into full rescue mode when a small struggle took place to gain control of the fluff ball.
After a very small foot chase they were able to restrain our furry friend in a patrol jacket.
Custody of the newest member of Holland Park aptly named ‘Poh’ was given to the RSPCA who attended the station to collect her.
Luckily Constables Bray and Finegan got to spend some koalaty time having plenty of hugs and pats

South Brisbane police officers took part in the Long Walk to support Indigenous community members
On Saturday, June 1, officers from across the South Brisbane Police District, along with hundreds of locals, took part in this years Long Walk event beginning at Kurilpa Point Park, which was a joint partnership with AFL Queensland, Deadly Choices and the Brisbane Lions.
Several high profile personalities including three-time premiership winning Brisbane Lion stars Ash McGrath and Chris Johnson along with Olympic Gold Medallist and former politician, Nova Peris and Patrick Johnson who represented Australia at the Olympics in sprinting – walked hand in hand with our officers in support of addressing Indigenous issues and promote Indigenous well-being and culture.
Representatives from the Queensland Police Service walked in uniform as a demonstration of their commitment to the Queensland community and to show that all Queenslander’s deserve respect, equality and fair treatment.

On Thursday May 30, officers from the South Brisbane Crime Prevention Unit were joined by their colleagues from the City Rail Squad to meet with commuters at South Bank Train Station.
The aim of the event was to educate commuters on personal safety and police gladly handed out hundreds of flyers to the commuters who use the station each and every day.
Between 7am and 8am, the crowd was mostly workers on their way to work, however most were glad to stop and have a chat with police, getting to know local officers as well as learning about personal safety and what they can do to keep themselves safe, particularly when utilising public transport.

On Friday May 31, officers from West End Station were out in support of Fatality Free Friday, an Australian Road Safety Foundation initiative.
With recent events in mind, officers stopped drivers to conduct Roadside Breath Tests whilst promoting the idea of Fatality Free Friday; reminding motorists to exercise care and consideration as they made their way around on the roads.
West End officers would like to thank the community for their efforts towards improving local road safety.

Five people have been charged with drug trafficking as part of Operation Papa Hierarchy a protracted operation targeting organised illicit drug distribution, particularly methylamphetamine and cocaine in Brisbane’s southside and bayside suburbs.
The 18-month joint operation involved detectives from Cleveland Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) and State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Group.
Early yesterday (June 5) detectives executed five search warrants at addresses in Morningside, Fortitude Valley, Alexander Hills and Birkdale.
Police will allege that during the searches dangerous drugs including cocaine, methylamphetamine, heroin and cannabis were located along with approximately $300,000.00 in cash, eight vehicles with a value of approximately $227,000.00, phones, jewellery and gun cases.
A 32-year-old man from Morningside was charged with four counts of trafficking in dangerous drugs, three counts of possession dangerous drugs and one count of possessing property obtained from trafficking in dangerous drugs.
