Launch of Operation Cold Snap

Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services, the Honourable Mark Ryan MP joined Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating at the Roma Street Fire Station today for the official launch of the school holiday road safety campaign, Operation Cold Snap.

Between June 29, and July 19, the QPS will coordinate a state-wide traffic policing operation designed to improve road safety and reduce the number of fatal or serious injury traffic crashes.
This operation coincides with the June/July school holidays and a period in which there is an increase in vehicles using Queensland roads.
The operation will include strategies such as a highly visible police presence on Queensland roads and roadside drug and alcohol testing for police to detect offences and enforce the road rules.
Assistant Commissioner Keating said Operation Cold Snap would reinforce the fatal five factors:

Speeding;
Drink/drug driving;
Seat belts;
Fatigue; and
Distraction.

Vehicle security reminder, Moorooka

Police are appealing to residents in Moorooka to remain vigilant with their vehicle security after 20 vehicle stealing related offences have been reported since the start of this month.
Unknown offender/s have stolen number plates, tools from tool boxes, wallets, cash, credit cards and keys left in vehicles and in some cases, vehicles were left unlocked and property were stolen.
Here are some vehicle security tips can assist you:

Always lock your vehicle, including the boot and sunroof, and remember to fully close all windows.
Always keep your keys out of sight and never leave vehicle keys lying around on tables, benches, bedside tables or key hooks.
Remove keys from the ignition and lock your vehicle if your vehicle is parked or unattended; even if it’s only for a minute.
Never hide spare keys on or in the vehicle – thieves know where to look.
Remove all valuables and personal items when leaving your car unattended, or

My Story: Sergeant Alicia Finigan, fingerprint expert

When you think of a fingerprint expert the first image your mind conjures up is probably from the iconic TV series CSI or one from the thousands of true crime docos that saturate Netflix’s viewing catalogues.
But art doesn’t always imitate life and the role of a fingerprint expert is far more sophisticated than TV shows will have you believe.

Sergeant Alicia Finigan is a fingerprint expert for the Gold Coast District. Her role involves both processing ‘arrest’ fingerprints and responsibility for the identification of offender’s ‘latent’ fingerprints found at crime scenes.
Her path to this important scientific role within the Queensland Police Service (QPS) began in 2006 when Sergeant Finigan was sworn in as a Constable at the age of 31.
Working as a general duties officer at Surfers Paradise for the first three years of her career, Sergeant Finigan became interested in the scenes of crime aspect of policing.

Update 1: Charges, Sunnybank and Macgregor incidents

A 56-year-old Sunnybank man has been charged at a bedside hearing this afternoon following incidents on Brisbane’s southside yesterday morning.
The man has been charged with assaults occasioning bodily harm, attempted unlawful entry of a vehicle for committing an indictable offence, dangerous operation of a vehicle and adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, driver failing to remain at incident and render assistance, driving without a licence, endangering particular property by fire, robbery, four charges of serious assault of a police officer, and two charges of unlawful entry of a vehicle for committing indictable offence.
The man was remanded to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 29.

Update 2: Sunnybank shooting

Police investigating the shooting of a man and woman at Sunnybank on Saturday morning, June 22 are appealing for public assistance to help locate 38-year-old Sunnybank Hills man Brendyn Clark, who may be able to assist with the investigation.
He is described as Caucasian, approximately 175cms tall with a slim build, very short sandy/ginger hair and green eyes.
Anyone who sights Mr Clark is urged not to approach him but to immediately call Triple Zero (000).
Mr Clark is known to the victim’s and to the 24-year-old man arrested on Saturday morning at a Doolandella address. This incident is not believed to be random.
An Incident Centre has been established at Acacia Ridge Criminal Investigation Branch involving a team of detectives and specialist police.

Update 1: Police investigation – Sunnybank shooting

Investigations by police into a shooting at Sunnybank on Saturday morning, June 22 are continuing with police searching for a 38-year-old man in connection with the incident.
A 24-year-old man who was arrested at a Fred Pham Crescent, Doolandella address later that morning has been charged overnight with two counts of being an accessory after the fact to attempted murder.
He has also been charged with 16 other offences some of which include possession of firearms (three), possession of a silencer, an extendable baton, OC spray (capsicum spray), ammunition, an electro-conductive device, and four counts of possessing dangerous drugs and possession of a drug utensil.
Police will allege a search of the house located illegal weapons hidden in a wall cavity in the bedroom.
He is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court later today.
A 21-year-old Doolandella woman, also located at the Doolandella address, was interviewed by detectives.

On-going investigation – Sunnybank and Macgregor incident

A 56-year-old  Sunnybank man remains under police guard in a Brisbane hospital following two incidents on Brisbane’s southside on Sunday morning, June 23.
It will be alleged at around 9am a 40-year-old woman was clipped by a car as it entered a service station at the intersection of Mains Road and Turton Street at Sunnybank.
The male driver and sole occupant of the vehicle then entered the office/shop area where he threatened staff before stealing a small quantity of tobacco products.
The man then allegedly poured petrol from a bowser onto the ground, lighting it before speeding off.
Staff extinguished the small fire and police were called.
The female pedestrian was transported to hospital for assessment.
Around 9.15am the same vehicle was travelling along Mains Road at MacGregor when it allegedly slammed into the rear of a car stationary at a set of lights.

Man arrested following Sunnybank shooting

Police have arrested a man following a disturbance at Sunnybank this morning in which two people were shot.
Police were called to Goman Street around 7.20am where a man and woman were located with gunshot wounds. Both were transported to hospital, the man in a critical condition and the woman with non-life-threatening injuries.
A crime scene has been declared at Goman Street and a secondary crime scene has been established at a Fred Pham Crescent, Doolandella home, where police located and arrested the man a short while ago.
A vehicle seen leaving the Goman Street address has been located at the Doolandella address and is being examined by police.
Investigations continue and there is no further information known at this time.

Protest – Brisbane City

Police in Brisbane were kept busy with a large-scale protest which started in the city CBD before moving to South Brisbane.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has undertaken a significant amount of planning with a variety of stakeholders regarding anticipated highly planned, well organised and often illegal protest activity by Issue Motivated Groups (IMGs) and individuals regarding proposed mining activity in central Queensland.
The QPS supports lawful and peaceful protest and is committed to working with groups to plan and facilitate lawful activities.
People associated with the protest started gathering in numbers in Reddacliff Place, Brisbane city at around 5pm.
The large crowd, while noisy was mostly peaceful, listened to speeches before heading across the Victoria Bridge shortly before 6pm.
Protesters staged a brief ‘sit-down’ on the Bridge before moving into Grey Street where another ‘sit-down’ occurred before they marched onto Southbank.

Update – Taskforce Islands extradition, Brisbane

Detectives based at Hendra have extradited a man from Victoria this afternoon as part of ongoing investigations into a series of linked armed robberies in Brisbane three years ago.
Taskforce Islands was launched in 2016 after armed robberies at Murrumba Downs, Everton Park, Alderley and Albion during April and May.
The 29-year-old man is expected to be charged tonight and scheduled to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow.
