Armed robbery, Forest Lake

Seatbelts and child restraints save lives

On Wednesday August 28, as part of Queensland Road Safety Week, the South Brisbane District Crime Prevention Unit teamed up with Transport Main Roads, Road Policing Unit and Kids Safe to promote, educate and encourage both adults and children on the importance of wearing seat belts and appropriately fitted child restraints.
This event was hosted at Westfield Garden City with the support of the Westfield Garden City Management.
It is very pleasing to see how well the community responded to this important road safety message and in particular, young children who also play a pivotal role in educating and driving the message home.
Acting Sergeant Sarah Ellis said although the campaign had been around for a long time, police were still intercepting too many vehicles without restraints.
“We know that appropriately fitted restraints saves lives, we really need to get it right,” Acting Sergeant Ellis said.
Police will continue to meet with members of the

Bicycle riders getting their fix

Police from South Brisbane hosted another Coffee with a Cop event in Southbank this week.
Police took the opportunity to engage with the growing cycling community, to strengthen relationships, and gain feedback on how relationships between bike riders and other road users could be improved.
Proudly supported by 99 Bikes and the popular Garage Espresso, bike riders engaged with police with free coffee in hand.
Senior Sergeant Wayne Richter said the morning was a great success.
“Local riders are really grateful for police taking an interest in their safety, and for changes made to local infrastructure to separate riders from other road users,” Senior Sergeant Richter said.
“But everyone agrees that with a little patience, and some mutual respect for all road users, things will continue to improve.”
The crew were also joined by Inspector Tony Ridge, who enjoyed engaging with local bike riders, and is a driving force behind promoting continued improvements in road safety,

The science behind road safety: Drink and drug driving

This week is Queensland Road Safety Week and together with Department of Transport and Main Roads, StreetSmarts, we’re committed to putting road safety first. In 2018, 245 people were killed on Queensland roads.
Did you know that in 2018, 119 people were killed on Queensland roads as a result of drink or drug driving? That’s almost 50 per cent (48.6 per cent) of the total 2018 road toll.

A drink or two with a mate can be a recipe for a great time but if you plan to drink, you should always plan not to drive.
Alcohol causes blurred vision, a reduction in hearing, reduced attention span and a slowing down of reaction time.
All of these things are crucial to safely operating a motor vehicle.
Did you know? If you have a breath alcohol concentration level of just 0.15, you are 22 times more likely to become involved in a crash.
The facts:

Turning the screws against crime in South Brisbane

In conjunction with Queensland Road Safety Week, the South Brisbane District Crime Prevention Team along with the Road Policing Unit and Volunteers in Policing attended Westfield Garden City today, to turn the screws on crime.
Number plate theft remains an ongoing concern as thieves target these accessories to avoid detection when committing further offences.
The replacement of anti-theft one-way screws is one alternative action in which we can all participate to help prevent crime in our community.
Acting Senior Constable Amanda Rinaldi report strong interest in this crime prevention activity.
“It was rewarding to see members of the public taking up this free offer, as well as discussing and providing home and vehicle security information,” Acting Senior Constable Rinaldi said.
If you missed this opportunity, anti-theft screws can be purchased through your local hardware stores.
Crime prevention remains a priority for the South Brisbane District and is everyone’s responsibility.

Upper Mount Gravatt officers roll up their sleeves

The Emergency Services Blood Challenge is coming to a close at the end of this month and is an annual challenge amongst the three arms of the emergency services to see who can donate the most blood.
On Tuesday afternoon, I took some of Upper Mount Gravatt Station’s bravest into donate blood at the Red Cross blood mobile currently situated at Mount Gravatt Plaza.
Officers from General Duties, Scenes of Crime, Road Policing Unit and our Cultural Liaison Officers all attended and rolled up their sleeves.
To top the day off, I received my Chocolate Milk and Freddo frog at the end of my donation which made it all worth it, however ultimately, this is for a great cause and the community will benefit from a bit of healthy competition.
At last count, Victoria Police Service and New South Wales Police Force topped the leaderboard, followed closely by the Queensland Police Service (far behind
