This week is Queensland Road Safety Week and together with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) we’re committing to putting road safety first.
In 2019, 21 lives were lost, and 1,473 people were seriously injured on Queensland roads in crashes involving distracted drivers or riders.
If you’re travelling at 60km/h and take your eyes off the road for just two seconds, your vehicle will travel more than 33 metres. With the average person’s reaction time around 1.8 seconds, this means nearly four seconds can pass before a driver reacts to a hazard!
If you’re driving distracted, you are putting yourself and others at serious risk.
Distracted driving is caused by any activity that takes your attention off the road and could include taking your eyes off the road or your hands off the steering wheel. All types of distracted driving increase your risk of a car crash, major injury and even death.

Road conditions can change due to a variety of factors from weather, animals, the environment, traffic and roadworks so it’s important to drive to the prevailing conditions.
This includes on our state’s rural roads, where there were 136 lives lost and 1,915 people seriously injured in 2019 – that’s more than 60% of total lives lost on our roads.
When driving on rural and remote roads, remember:
Reduce your speed before nearing the edge of the road and prepare for surface change – the edge may drop off or have loose stones.
If you’re driving towards the west, the afternoon sun can affect your vision. Consider this when planning your trip.
Keep an eye out for livestock and wildlife on or at the side of the road, especially at night. Slow
Emergency Alert issued for multiple Brisbane suburbs (3pm Sun 23 Aug) – Queensland Health alert re COVID-19
Emergency alerts from Queensland Health have been issued for residents in multiple suburbs in the south, south-east and south-west of Brisbane.
The Chief Health Officer advises that residents that have been to locations related to the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre COVID-19 cluster should monitor their health and, if they develop even the mildest of COVID-19 symptoms, get tested.

Possession and distribution of child exploitation material – Kangaroo Point
Detectives from South Brisbane District executed a search warrant at the Australian Border Force Kangaroo Point Alternate Place of Detention Facility today.
Detectives seized electronic devices in the possession of a male detainee at the facility.
Police subsequently issued the detainee with a Notice to Appear for offences of possess child exploitation material and distribute child exploitation material (one count each).
The man is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on September 18.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be provided.
The Queensland Police Service acknowledges the cooperation of Australian Border Force members in this investigation.
Money Laundering arrest involving Business Email Compromise scam
Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Financial and Cyber Crime Group have arrested a 65-year-old Brisbane woman for money laundering following reports of business emails being compromised.
An investigation by the Queensland Police Service, with assistance from the Australian Federal Police, commenced in July 2020 as part of QPS Operation Sierra Convertible. Notifications to the national Report Cyber hotline identified businesses being subjected to email compromise offences.
It will be alleged the woman, an accountant, was identified offending by receiving varying funds in excess of $3.3million from a range of compromised businesses who had their email exchanges intercepted by hackers.
It will be alleged the woman regularly received funds into multiple bank accounts she had opened before distributing the funds overseas.
The woman was arrested yesterday following a search warrant being executed at her Carina home, where computers and mobile phones were seized.

Charges laid following incident, Mansfield
Police arrested a 32-year-old Mansfield man on Monday, August 17 on Laconia Street, Mansfield.
Police allege the man was pointing replica weapons at passing vehicles on Broadwater Road, Mansfield.
Officers allegedly found and seized four replica weapons, and no one was physically injured as a result.
The man was later transported to Upper Mount Gravatt Police Station where he was charged with one count of going armed so as to cause fear, one count of common assault and two counts of serious assault police officer whilst pretending / is armed with a weapon.
Police urge members of the public to be aware of the seriousness of carrying and using replica or toy firearms in public spaces.
The man is due to reappear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on September 8.

Update: Police involved shooting, Upper Mount Gravatt
Police have charged a man following the stabbing of a police officer at Upper Mount Gravatt earlier this month.
A 25-year-old man has been charged with one count of attempted murder. The man remains in hospital and is expected to have a bedside hearing tomorrow (August 19).

A police officer is recovering in hospital after being stabbed by a man at Upper Mount Gravatt yesterday afternoon.
Police attended a residence on Hillgrove Street just before 5pm to serve the man with documents.
Preliminary information indicates the man lunged at an officer with a knife, slashing him across the face. Another police officer has discharged their firearm and shot the man multiple times in the abdomen.
The male senior constable sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries in the attack and is recovering in hospital.
The man, aged 25-years-old, remains in hospital after undergoing surgery overnight.
A crime scene declared is still in place as officers continue their investigations.

Homicide, Alexandra Hills
Detectives investigating the death of a 64-year-old man in Alexandra Hills last week have charged a woman with murder.
Around 10.30am last Friday (August 14), police were called to a Jasmine Street address after a 64-year-old man was found deceased.
A crime scene was declared, and an investigation was launched.
A 66-year-old Alexandra Hills woman has been charged with murder domestic violence and will appear in Cleveland Magistrates Court tomorrow (August 18).
The investigation is ongoing.

Appeal for information – Robbery, Manly West
Police are seeking information as investigations into a violent robbery at Manly West on the weekend continue.
Just before midday on Sunday, a 45-year-old man has driven his ute into a driveway on Peregian Close when another man has approached him from a black Toyota Corolla parked in the street.
A struggle took place between the two men before he drove off in the car, a silver Toyota Hilux.
As the ute’s driver has attempted to stop the man, he was run over by the vehicle and sustained serious injuries.
The Toyota Hilux was located abandoned in Amberjack Street a short time later.
Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have information that could identify the man or the Toyota Corolla to contact police.

Assault and unlawful use of a motor vehicle, Kuraby
Police are investigating after a ride-share driver was assaulted and his car was stolen in Kuraby overnight.
Around 9.10pm, the driver collected four male passengers from the corner of Kingston Road and Smith Road at Woodridge.
When the group arrived at their destination in Besline Street, Kuraby the passengers assaulted the driver, dragged him from the vehicle and continued to assault him, then fled in his car.
The driver received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Investigations are continuing.
