Student of the Month Awards at the Murri School

South Brisbane District’s Cross Cultural Liaison Officer Sergeant Jim Bellos had the privilege of presenting a number of Student of the Month Awards at the Murri School in Acacia Ridge (Aboriginal and Islander Independent School) on February 28.
Winners are grinners! Congratulations to the students awarded this month
The presentation was a double celebration as the event marked 10 years for the Sergeant as the school’s official Adopt-A-Cop.
Sergeant Bellos regularly presents these ‘deadly’ awards, which aim to promote the three R’s (Rights, Respect and Responsibility).
“These engagements are integral in fostering respect and understanding between the students, police and community,” Sergeant Bellos said.
“It also allows us to discuss topical issues such as bullying, cyber-bullying and personal safety in a safe and positive environment.”
Well done to all the recipients and congratulations to Sergeant Bellos on this incredible milestone.

Carina Police Station station badge project

It was almost 12 months to the date that an off-the-cuff remark to one of the members of the Carina Mens Shed led to the restoration of an important part of the Queensland Police Service’s History and in particular, the origins of the Carina Police Station.
During the 19th century, police stations were not identified in any way, so if you wanted to find one you needed some luck or local knowledge. In 1907, Police Commissioner William Cahill and the Deputy Queensland Government Architect designed the Queensland Police Station Badge based on the police cap badge of the time.
In 1911, 300 cast iron badges, each weighing 17 pounds (seven kilograms) and costing four shillings and 10 pence, were manufactured for the Police Department by Harvey & Son, Globe Iron Works, Brisbane and distributed as identification badges to every Police Station in the state.
On November 11, 1958 because of complaints that police stations were

West End ‘brakes’ in new bike officers

West End Police Station has increased its ability to keep the local community safe while using service issued mountain bikes.
West End Bike Squad training officer Constable Pete Conradie recently conducted a two day course to train three of his colleagues also stationed at West End to safely and effectively utilise QPS Bicycles to perform their general policing duties.
West End Station currently has a permanent four person Bike Squad who perform the majority of their duties on bikes.
Due to the effectiveness of bicycles as a policing tool within a diverse inner city and urbanised environment like West End and South Brisbane, West End Police have been gradually training more of their other front line officers on bikes.
Bicycle officers at West End can be called upon to respond to routine or high priority calls for assistance, actively patrol hotspots to deter criminal activity, provide a visible police presence in highly patronised public
