Bicycle security and identification

From January to November 2017 over 400 bicycles have been reported stolen in the South Brisbane District. Each year thousands of bicycles are either found by police, located by members of the public or reported to police as stolen across Queensland. Unfortunately, in many cases owners never see their bicycles again simply because they cannot be identified.
Remember, it only takes a few seconds to steal a bike, so let’s work together to prevent, secure and identify your bicycle.
Reduce the chances of theft by:

Not leaving your bicycle unattended and unlocked – even for a short time.
Securing it to something solid – like railings or a post – and make sure the bike cannot be lifted off.
Leaving and securing your bike in a busy, well-lit location where it can easily be seen – if possible look around and try to leave the bike secured near CCTV cameras.

Police are encouraging anyone that is selling any products online to use caution when dealing with potential buyers. Asking for identification before handing over any products or meeting in a secure public place can decrease the chances of someone potentially becoming a victim of these crimes.
