RUBY (Rise Up Be Yourself) has begun – a free physical fitness program for women who are, have been, or are likely to be experiencing domestic and family violence.
This morning we saw the official launch of the RUBY Program at the Carindale Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC). Among the many dignitaries who attended was Acting Assistant Commissioner Brian Wilkins, Acting Chief Superintendent Mick Niland and the Honourable Di Farmer – Member for Bulimba and Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women, Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence.
Held weekly at a number of PCYC branches across Queensland, RUBY is designed to empower women by building physical strength and contributing to general well-being, emotional resilience, self-esteem and confidence through physical exercise in a violence-free and safe environment.

Wall climb alleged in burglary charge: Woolloongabba
A man who was injured after allegedly climbing the walls of a Woolloongabba unit complex has been charged with burglary.
Police charged a 30-year-old man from South Brisbane with burglary and breach of bail offences after witnesses and police located him at the scene of one of the alleged offences.
Police were called to a break and enter of a unit within a complex in Regent St, Woolloongabba, on April 5. Entry had been made to a first-floor unit through a partially open door, and a quantity of property had been stolen. The alleged offender had apparently made his way into the unit by scaling the walls of the unit block. He allegedly tried to come down the same way but injured himself in the process.
Police located a man in the car park with head injuries and a broken wrist. Property reported stolen from the break and enter were allegedly found in

Police from the Upper Mount Gravatt Bike Squad have recently been seen rolling through the Arise and Rochedale Estates after a spike in break and enters in the area.
Senior Constable Gavin King and Constable Ante Boban spoke to Arise representative Vic Cahill about the events to provide Crime Prevention advice.
Police noted that a number burglaries were committed during the early hours of the morning before sunrise and during the day, while people are at work. Mr Cahill said that bollards will be installed to prevent people using an easement to drive onto the estate.

Segway boost to police patrols
Police will use additional Segways to patrol South Bank during Festival 2018 events as part of the Commonwealth Games.
The two new Segways would be deployed to promote public order and safety in South Bank from today until April 15.
This doubling of the number of Segways available to officers will contribute to current operations in the South Bank precinct and allow the broader deployment of the units in the future to help keep the community safe.
Segways have already been used by police to maximise their sightlines over people and to provide highly visible patrols.
Police on Segways have also found and arrested people for a range of offences including drug and property crimes.
They will now be used for patrols of South Bank as it hosts a range of festivities for the Commonwealth Games.

Robbery with violence, East Brisbane
Police are investigating a violent robbery that occurred at a unit in East Brisbane this morning.
At around 3am two men have entered a residence on Northcote Street and have assaulted and threatened a woman.
It is believed one of the men searched her apartment during this time.
The two men have then left the property in an unknown direction.
The woman was treated at the scene for minor abrasions.
Investigators are appealing for any persons who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area to contact police.
Investigations are continuing.

Police urge business owners to conduct an assessment of their premises as offenders are targeting construction yards and car yards in the Inala area. The offenders are in search of tools and copper wire and are seeking unlocked storage sheds and containers or poorly secured items at these premises and removing them.
For the safety of your business and your employees, Police recommend reviewing your current security systems. Perhaps its time to revise some of the following:
Locking doors and windows and installing security screens and appropriate lighting.
Review locks and security on external sheds, containers and other storage facilities.
Review cash handling and banking procedures.
Warning signs/stickers to deter intruders eg No Cash on Premises
Consider CCTV cameras and alarms.
Reporting any suspicious behaviour to Police will prevent and solve crime.

QPS on hand at Milpera State HS exit ceremony
Representatives from the Queensland Police Service were honoured to participate at the recent Milpera State High School Exit Ceremony for graduating students.
Milpera State High is a unique school which prides itself as a vibrant educational institution dedicated to the settlement and English language development of recently arrived migrants from backgrounds where a language other than English is spoken.
As part of the ceremony, students presented several heartfelt performances including musical renditions, cultural dancing and story telling.
Sgt Jim Bellos, the Cross Cultural Liaison Officer for the South Brisbane District, was once again invited to present the annual Queensland Police Service Peace Awards to students that have demonstrated respect, courtesy, kindness, cooperation, harmony and compassion to their peers and the wider community. This year’s graduating class saw the highest total number of recipients for the certificates with Student Leader Arian Hedayati being recognised as the winner of this year’s Queensland Police Service Peace Shield.
Appeal for witnesses – Hit and run, Belmont
Police are appealing for public assistance as investigations continue into a hit and run traffic incident in Belmont on March 28.
At about 12pm, a red utility crashed into the rear of a white Nissan hatchback as it slowed to give way to merging traffic on the Old Cleveland Road onramp from the Gateway Motorway exit.
The hatchback was pushed across two lanes on Old Cleveland Road in front of a large truck which narrowly avoided a further collision.
The utility immediately left the scene and was last seen heading towards Chandler.
Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have dashcam vision to contact police.

Mentoring for migrant youth
Over 100 attendees recently gathered at the Edge Auditorium, State Library at South Bank as part of the Migrant Youth Vision Project’s (MYVP) Speed Mentoring Event.
This initiative was coordinated by the MYVP and supported by the Multicultural Development Association, the Queensland African Communities Council, Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma, HELP Enterprises and Youth Without Borders.

International students, migrants and refugees from across the multicultural community had the opportunity to become mentors and ask questions about employment pathways to representatives from, The Queensland Police Service, Recruitment Agencies, Not for Profit Associations, Corporate Bodies and various Inter-Government Agencies.
No questions were left unanswered and many of the youth found this forum to be an ideal opportunity to build their confidence and aspire to move forward in their career development.
For mentors, this dialogue was a fantastic opportunity to give back to the next generation of willing workers through sage and practical advice.

Senior Police Liaison Officer Mary Kenyi alongside new recruits Police Liaison Officers Nasra Aden and Yen Nguyen have recently been busy celebrating with our vibrant multicultural communities at two major events in the South Brisbane District.
The first program was hosted by the Australian African Women’s Network (AAWN) in recognition of International Women’s Day: Leave No Woman Behind at Africa House, Morningside.

The event featured addresses by Di Farmer the Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Saba Abraham the Founder of Mu’ooz Restaurant and Rose Alba Chairperson of AAWN.
This event was supported by the Queensland Government, ACCESS Community Services Ltd, Mu’ooz Restaurant, The Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma, and The Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland.
This initiative was a tremendous success and was a fantastic opportunity to highlight the unique challenges facing women across the African continent.
