The Long Walk 2018: Many Steps, One Community

In November, 2004, AFL Legend Michael Long embarked on a historic trek from his home in Melbourne all the way to Parliament House in Canberra to meet with then Prime Minister John Howard.
His goal was to get Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues on the national agenda. ‘The Long Walk’ was an inspirational period in Australia’s modern Indigenous history.
Now an annual tradition, the Long Walk symbolises Australians (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) to express their commitment to reconciliation.

On Sunday, June 10, Senior Police Liaison Officers Jacqueline Carter-O’Leary, Doug Peachy and Aleni Ta’alolo, along with hundreds of locals, took part in this year’s celebration beginning at Kurilpa Point Park, which was a joint partnership with AFL Queensland Deadly Choices, The Long Walk and the Brisbane Lions.

Lanterns light up South Bank

The Luminous Lantern Parade was once again held at Brisbane’s South Bank on Friday, June 8.
This year’s festivities marks the 11th consecutive year of the event, being the largest, most colourful and brightest to date.
What initially began as a humble event of 50 people has now grown to a spectacular celebration of over 20,000 participants, spectators and supporters filling the Cultural Forecourt and Riverside in the South Bank Precinct.

Senior Police Liaison Officers (SPLO) Mary Kenyi, Li Shan Huang, Weng Mun Sum and PLO Nasra Aden were enamoured by the sights of glowing animals and characters of all shapes and sizes lighting up the night sky.
Senior Police Liaison Officer Mary Kenyi said the addition of beautiful Australian fauna was a really nice touch.
“You can tell that the young, and the young at heart, really love to see such great artistic celebrations in our community.” she said.

Grow houses located, Brisbane south

Two people have been charged with 29 offences after police located a number of alleged “grow houses” during raids on addresses in Brisbane’s south yesterday.
Papa Cider is an on-going Drug and Serious Crime Group investigation targeting drug traffickers involved in the production and distribution of cannabis.
On June 15, search warrants were executed at residences on Beaudesert Road at Moorooka, Logan Road at Upper Mount Gravatt and Emperor Street, Annerley. The estimated value of the illicit drugs seized is $1,350,000.
Each residence allegedly contained a sophisticated hydroponic setup (‘grow-house’) with cannabis plants at various stages of maturation being used for the production of cannabis.
In Moorooka a total of 43 cannabis plants and a significant amount of hydroponic equipment valued was located as well as a sum of cash.
At Upper Mount Gravatt a total of 195 cannabis plants, one kilogram of dried cannabis and a significant amount of hydroponic equipment was seized.

A month of reflection

As Ramadan 2018 comes to an end, Officers from across the South Brisbane District took time to reflect over the month as being one of the most peaceful, uplifting  and rewarding to date.
Festivities took place in the form of Iftaar dinners, insightful community forums and even community football tournaments.

Ramadan is well-known as the month of fasting from sunrise to sunset across the Islamic Faith and as such Iftaar Dinners represent the end of the day-long period of fasting.
The Queensland Police Service continued its tradition of hosting this unique event at the Greek Club South Brisbane, with this year’s gathering marking the fourth consecutive year with over 200 guests in attendance.

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart AM also proudly presented special recognition awards to Galila Abdesalam (President, Islamic Women’s Association of Queensland), Dr. Mustafa Ali (Editor-in-Chief,  Crescents Community Newsletter) and Hussain Baba (Secretary, Islamic Society of Gold Coast Inc).

Armed robbery, Acacia Ridge

Two boys have been charged following the armed robbery of an Acacia Ridge bakery this afternoon.
It will be alleged that around 1.15pm, a boy entered the Mortimer Road business and threatened a male staff member with a baseball bat.
He allegedly demanded money before jumping over the counter and grabbing money out of a basket and fled the scene on foot.
He was later joined by a younger boy who police allege may have been acting as a look out for the other.
Witnesses assisted police determine the direction they had fled, and a police dog and their handler was able to track them to a home nearby.
Both boys – a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old – were conveyed to Acacia Ridge police station and charged with armed robbery.

Update 2: Fatal traffic crash, Rochedale

Police have charged a man following a fatal crash at Rochedale on June 3.
It will be alleged that around 4.20am, a utility travelling in the wrong direction of the Gateway Motorway’s northbound lanes collided with a hatchback near the Mount Capalaba exit.
The passenger in the hatchback – a 61-year-old Maroochydore man – was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital but subsequently passed away.
The 63-year-old female driver also from Maroochydore was transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with serious injuries.
Yesterday, a 29-year-old Fortitude Valley man who police allege was the driver and sole occupant of the utility, was arrested in Good Night, south east of Bundaberg.
He has been charged with manslaughter and is due to appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court this morning.

Update: Serious assault, Capalaba

Capalaba police have charged a man following a serious assault at the Capalaba Bus Interchange on April 20.
It will be alleged around 9.30pm a 28-year-old man was walking to the interchange on Redland Bay Road when he was approached by a young man and woman who became aggressive.
The man attempted to flee from the pair however was allegedly pursued until he tripped over.
The 28-year-old man was then allegedly assaulted, receiving a broken jaw as a result.
The man has since undergone reconstructive surgery for his injuries.
Following a public appeal on June 6 police from Capalaba Tactical Crime Squad took a man into custody at a Capalaba address this afternoon.
A 31-year-old Capalaba man has been charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning bodily harm, possessing dangerous drugs, possessing property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence and possessing utensils or pipes.

‘Coffee with a Cop’ – South Brisbane

Officers from South Brisbane along with Micah Projects and Common Ground Queensland held ‘Coffee with a Cop’ today at the Hope Street Café, South Brisbane.
It was a great success with many local residents coming along to chat with police and our Volunteers in Policing (ViPs).
We had plenty of information about a range of crime prevention initiatives that was handed out to the local community.
It was such a success that we will be holding ‘Coffee with a Cop’ at the Hope Street Café on the first Thursday on every month.
So come along and meet your local police and discuss any issues or just say hello.
Thanks to all who attended and were involved in the organisation of the event.  Together we are working to strengthen community relationships and prevent crime.

Police make further appeal in Britton cold case murder, Airlie Beach

Homicide detectives investigating the murder of Dorothy Britton at Airlie Beach in 1996 have received new information about the case since their appeal in May.
The body of the 48-year-old woman was found at 6.30pm on Thursday, 7 March 1996 in her house at Timberlands Road, Jubilee Pocket, Airlie Beach.
Mrs Britton was last seen alive at about midday on the previous day and had died as a result of a gunshot wound.
Homicide Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Knight said police were confident that the offender had a close association with Mrs Britton, had extensive knowledge of her lifestyle and routines and was familiar with her loyal and protective Rottweiler dog, Bella.
“I have no doubt that Mrs Britton knew her killer and detectives are appealing for anyone who may have heard someone speak about the circumstances surrounding her murder to contact police” Detective Senior Sergeant Knight said.
