Back to school, Sunnybank

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I think many of us ‘grown ups’ still ask ourselves this question! Career days are happening all over Queensland in our secondary schools at the moment.
Police often get invited to attend these days but this was particularly special for me as Sunnybank State High School is my old stomping ground.
It was inspiring to see so many students with a passion to pursue such a wide variety of professions. Even if the students don’t necessarily want to join the police, it’s fun to explain what police do day to day.
I was delighted to find out a number of students are chasing my original dream of being a professional soccer player.
I joined School Based Police Officers Shane and Crystal to spread the good word and promote our police service positively.
It’s been over 10 years since I was on the school grounds and to see all

‘Top Cop’ recipient remembers mate

The Rotary Top Cop Award recognises police officers who go above and beyond within their communities and is nominated and voted for by members of that community. The award comes with $500 that is donated to the award winners chosen charity.

In 2012 Senior Constable Kerri Edwards was the recipient of the Pine Rivers Rotary Top Cop Award and she donated her winnings to the Cancer Council Queensland on behalf of her friend and co-worker Kika Lesa who was battling breast cancer.
Sadly Kika lost the battle not long afterwards and left behind a husband and three beautiful children.
When Senior Constable Kerri Edwards won it again this year she asked Elisa Lesa, the daughter of Kika, if she would mind being present when she donated the award money again to the Cancer Council Queensland.
Elisa agreed and said she was proud to be there in memory of her mum.
Senior Constable Edwards joined by Ron

Rochedale Community Day

On Saturday, August 4, officers and VIPs (Volunteers In Police) from the South Brisbane District Crime Prevention Unit attended Rochedale Community Day Celebrations at the Rochedale Arise.
Officers and VIPs had the privilege of interacting with the diverse community and educating attendees on the importance of home, personal and vehicle safety.
This event was run in conjunction with the opening of the new estate at Rochedale and was an excellent forum to welcome new residents to the area and provide them with the essential crime prevention knowledge that they can apply in their neighbourhood.
This was a great opportunity to interact with the community and discuss important issues in this culturally rich part of South Brisbane said Senior Police Liaison Officer Li-Shan Huang.
“Many thanks to all who popped in to say hello, we look forward to working with you to build a safe and prosperous Rochedale”

Morningside police urge motorists to secure their vehicles

Morningside police would like to remind motorists to secure their vehicles to deter opportunistic thieves.
Over the past few weeks we have conducted patrols in and around the Morningside, Bulimba, Hawthorne and Balmoral areas. Disturbingly, in a large number of cases, vehicles left unattended were not locked.
From experience we know that if we make it easy for criminals, they have a tendency to return and also pass this information onto associates.
There are a few simple things that people can do to help prevent their vehicles and/or their valuables being stolen from vehicles.
Motorists are reminded to:

Lock doors and ensure windows are up
Use anti – theft devices ie steering locks, alarms, engine immobilisers etc.
Place valuables in the boot, glove box, centre console or under blankets so thieves aren’t tempted to target your vehicle.
Do not leave keys under the seat, under wheel arches or in the ignition.
Park your vehicle in an area where there is

Dedication ceremony for fallen QPS officers

Commissioner Stewart with attendees of the dedication ceremony at Toowong Cemetery
Commissioner Ian Stewart joined officers, families, and Friends of the Queensland Police Museum (FOQPM) at Toowong Cemetery on Tuesday to mark the restoration of the graves of two fallen QPS members who died over a century ago.
The two graves were that of Constable Benjamin Ebbitt and Sergeant Thomas Heaney who died as a result of severe injuries from being assaulted on duty, in unrelated incidents, when attempting to arrest offenders.
Sergeant Heaney died in 1906 in South Brisbane from assault injuries he sustained while attempting to arrest two burglars at the Norman Hotel, Woolloongabba in 1905. Constable Ebbitt died in 1894 from assault injuries he sustained when he attempted to intervene and arrest two offenders for an assault in Croydon in 1890.
Searching for the location of Sergeant Heaney’s grave in 2015 led to the chance finding of Constable Ebbitt’s neighbouring grave
