Sunnybank lunchtime shoppers took time out of their day today to visit the police pop-up stand at Sunnybank Plaza where they were shown how to play their part in road safety.
Today’s focus is speed.
Police provided road safety information and give-aways and spent time discussing road safety initiatives with members of the Sunnybank Community.
South Brisbane Crime Prevention Police, Police Beat officers and volunteers were joined by Superintendent Virginia Nelson, Inspectors Tim Partridge and Mick Dowdy and Senior Sergeant Dallas Kowald to promote safety on Queensland roads.
Police Liaison Officer, Ken Rong did a fantastic job assisting police to communicate with the non-English speaking members of the community.
Thanks to all who came and committed to putting road safety first.

Local Police visit South Brisbane Sikh cultural hub
On Friday August 23, officers from across the South Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan Police Districts had the opportunity to visit and engage with the leaders and patrons at the Brisbane Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) and the Sahara House women’s refuge shelter.
The iconic place of worship started its congregation in 1988 and ever since, the Sikh community has grown in significant numbers.
The purpose of the visit itself was to help break down barriers between the service and the Sikh community as well as to identify and address community concerns relating to family and domestic violence, crime prevention and safety.
Founder and Manager of the Sahara Women’s Shelter, Jatinder Kaur led the discussion on Domestic and Family Violence during the visit to refuge and alongside her son, introduced officers to attendees at the Langar (community kitchen) during the visit to the holy place of worship.
Jatinder Kaur said today we were able to form a
Road Safety Week begins in Brisbane’s Bayside
Officers from the Bayside Patrol Group kicked off the Queensland Road Safety Week campaign with two pop up events on Monday August 26, in Cleveland and North Stradbroke Island.
Queensland Road safety week is a joint QPS and Department of Transport and Main Roads initiative which aims to enhance community education and knowledge on road safety matters including the Fatal Five.
Acting Sergeant Sherry Ho said the pop-up events were a great way to reach out to the community, providing resources and information on road safety.
“These types of events are also a fantastic way for everyone to meet their local police and ask questions in a safe and supportive environment,” Acting Sergeant Ho said.
Superintendent Virginia Nelson said police are asking all road users to make road safety their number one priority, every time they use the roads by any mode or means.
There are many more activities across the Region throughout the week
Catholic Enquiry Group
The Catholic Enquiry Group will begin a new cycle starting on Tuesday 1 October at 7:30pm – 8:45pm. This group is for adults who wish to enquire into or prepare to be received into the Church and become Catholic. This program also takes the place of RCIA. Catholics who wish to reconnect with their faith after some time away from the Church, or who would like to go over the faith, are also welcome.
Here at the Oratory we use Evangelium which is a thourough program that covers the Catholic Faith to give people a solid foundation in what Catholics believe and why including the Creed, Sacraments, Morals, and Prayer. The groups are usually small in number allowing some time for discussion and questions.
If you are discerning a call to become a Catholic or would just like to learn more please contact Teresa Martin who is the program coordinator on 0413763256
The science behind road safety: Speed and safe stopping distances
This week is Queensland Road Safety Week and together with Department of Transport and Main Roads, StreetSmarts, we’re committed to putting road safety first. In 2018, 245 people were killed on Queensland roads.
You might think that travelling just one or two kilometres over the posted speed limit is ok, but the reality is that this is never ok.
In 2018, 50 people died on Queensland roads and 379 were seriously injured, in crashes involving speeding.
To avoid speeding, regularly check your speedometer while driving and drive to the conditions.
Ensure you are not following the car in front too closely and leave a gap of two seconds, increasing this when conditions are poor.
Based on this, why would risk those few extra kilometres per hour?
The facts:
The speed limit in built-up areas in Queensland is 50km/h unless otherwise indicated by signs.
In 2018, one in every five fatalities were as a result of speed.

The science behind road safety: Seatbelts
This week is Queensland Road Safety Week and together with Department of Transport and Main Roads, StreetSmarts, we’re committed to putting road safety first. In 2018, 245 people were killed on Queensland roads.
Did you know that in 2018, 30 people were killed on Queensland roads as a result of not wearing proper restraints (seatbelt), where restraint use was known?
A lot of science has gone into the construction and introduction of seatbelts in modern cars.
The seatbelt is one of the most simple safety devices in a vehicle and the outcomes of using it can be life-saving, by stopping you and your passengers from being thrown from the vehicle or through the windscreen in a crash.
The facts:
All people travelling in a vehicle fitted with seatbelts must be appropriately restrained unless exempted.
One in four vehicle occupant fatalities in 2018 were unrestrained, where restraint use was known.
And if you choose not to:
