National firearms amnesty targets illegal weapons
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan and Commissioner Ian Stewart are aiming to reduce the number of unregistered and unwanted firearms in Queensland through a national firearms amnesty.
From July 1 to September 30, anyone who has an unregistered firearm or firearm-related article in their possession – for whatever reason – will have the chance to legally dispose of it or register it without penalty.
Commissioner Stewart said this is the time to act.
“Not only will all participants avoid prosecution and the risk of being fined up to $60,000, they will also help keep our community safe by ensuring unregistered firearms don’t fall into the wrong hands,” Commissioner Stewart said.
“Here in Queensland, we have made it as easy as possible to participate.
“Firearms and firearm-related items should be handed in at licensed firearms dealers. A detailed list of all participating dealers is on the Queensland Police website at www.police.qld.gov.au. Alternatively,
