Celebrity Chef Ben O’Donoghue’s Billykart Kitchen in Annerley has been voted as one of the best cafés in Brisbane. The “casual yet sophisticated” food hub was among the “Ten Best Cafes” in Brisbane, as voted by the people in The Weekend Edition recently. Owners Ben and his wife, De-Arne Wicks (Dee), describes their menu as “casual sophistication” with a range of ever-changing exciting items to choose from.

For a decade now, the café scene in Brisbane has shown rapid growth and success. Each suburb has its own array of food havens to boast. But over time, there will always be those hubs that excel in the hearts (and appetites) of the people. That’s exactly what happened to Annerley’s Billykart Kitchen ever since it opened in September 2013.

What used to be the old Clifton Hill General Store is now a vibrant food hub with delectable items well-appreciated by both locals and tourists. Standing proudly in the wide tree-lined streets of the suburb, the establishment was named for the fact that the area was a “hotspot” in the 1950s “for kids to race billykarts down the hills.” It is for this same reason that the charming 80-seater café maintains its sweet “corner store” vibe.

Located in Annerley’s 1 Eric Cres, this licensed café serves food items cooked from “fresh, local and seasonal produce” by Australia’s renowned celebrity chef, television presenter, and author. Their menu items are regularly changing to meet the demands and differing interests of everyone. “We see Billykart Kitchen as being a real part of the community and look forward to connecting with all the locals,” said Ben.

Owners Ben and Dee also proudly grow spices and herbs in their own organic garden. With this, café patrons are guaranteed to be eating healthy garden to gourmet fare. Their well-loved food items include the Aussie Asian Eggs (with King Prawns Bacon & Chili and Date), Apple and Quinoa Bircher Muesli, Roasted Coconut, Hazelnut & Pecans, Pulled Berkshire Pork Shoulder, Sugar Loaf Slaw & Baja Sauce, Chili Mussel and Diamond Shell Clams, and Charcuterie Board with House-made Piccalilli.

They also serve Danish pastries and gluten-free baked goods. They make scrumptious complements for delicious cups of warm Campos Coffee. Cakes, jams, cream, and butter are produced straight from the café’s nifty kitchen.

Friday nights at Billykart Kitchen are fun moments to remember. It is only during this day of the week that the café stays open to “serve a special dinner service.” Each Friday, Chef Ben showcases “a range of diverse cuisines” depending on the season and available produce. Sometimes, he even serves really delicious food at his own fancy. If you’re lucky, you might be in for a rather tasty surprise!

“Stumbled upon this corner cafe and so glad that we did. First impression, great atmosphere and friendly staff. Everything on the menu sounds amazing but you have to have the crispy pork with cuttlefish and Asian salad… it’s to die for! I could easily have another serving!!! Looking forward to coming back to eat my way through the menu.” [ Stacey Tan, visitor review ]
