Police are encouraging members of the community to be vigilant with personal safety measures after incidents of street robberies were recently reported to police.
Robbery offences are often opportunistic, with offenders selecting targets who are often unaware of their surroundings, distracted (listening to music, looking at mobile phones), or in a location that makes them a vulnerable target (poorly lit area, with little to no pedestrian or vehicle traffic).
Reported offences have indicated that offenders are targeting personal property items, such as mobile phones, wallets, bank cards and handbags.
Offences have been reported in the Sunnybank area.
In order to reduce the likelihood of becoming a target for a robbery, we offer the following strategies:
Be aware – stay alert to your surroundings. Take off your headphones, take your eyes off the screen and enjoy the view.
Plan ahead – pick a route that is well-lit and in populated areas. Travel with others and identify safe places
