A Yeronga State High School student is preparing to take her basketball journey to the international stage after being selected to compete at the World Youth Championships in Singapore this August, marking another milestone in an impressive year of representative success.
Bessie, a Year 7 student, will travel to Singapore for the World Youth Championships, where promising young basketball players from 14 nations will compete in four days of elite competition and cultural exchange. Her selection follows a strong representative season that has seen her collect medals at major Queensland junior basketball tournaments.
Bessie recently helped the South West Metro Pirates representative team secure a silver medal at the South Queensland Junior Basketball Competition (SQJBC). She then backed that up with a bronze medal in Division 2 at the Basketball Queensland State Championships, continuing a successful campaign before stepping onto the international stage.
Yeronga State High School congratulated Bessie on her achievements, praising her dedication, determination and passion for basketball. The school also said her hard work continues to inspire the wider school community and wished her every success in Singapore.
Bessie’s representative journey has been building over several seasons. Earlier this year, the school announced her selection in the South West Metro Pirates Under 14 Gold representative team, noting that 2026 marks her third consecutive year with the Pirates program.
Across those three seasons, Bessie has represented the South West Metro Pirates in major junior competitions, including the SQJBC and the Basketball Queensland State Championships. Her latest achievements have now earned her the opportunity to compete internationally.
World Youth Championships
The World Youth Championships, which will take place from 6 to 9 August, will bring together emerging basketball talent from across the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, and North America.
According to tournament organisers, teams from 14 nations, including host nation Singapore, will compete across four days of matches that combine elite competition with cultural exchange.
For Bessie, the tournament will provide an opportunity to compete on the international stage following a successful representative season in Queensland. Back at Yeronga State High School, the community has celebrated her selection and achievements throughout the year.
