QPS joins Somali community for a night of cultural celebration

Acting Chief Superintendent Virginia Nelson alongside her colleagues, Acting Inspector Bettina Wilson, Senior Police Liaison Officer Mary Kenyi and Police Liaison Officer Nasra Aden, were treated to a ‘Night of Cultural Showcase and Celebration of Achievements’ hosted by the Somali Women’s Association of Queensland (SWAQ) on Friday April 26 at the Souths Sports Club, Acacia Ridge.

Founder and current president of SWAQ, Mumina Isse said newly arrived refugees and immigrants sometimes feel isolated, disconnected and disengaged from mainstream society, which is why the SWAQ was formed in 2004 to support Somali mothers and their families.
“We want to unite and connect Somali women through the common threads of culture and tradition that we all share,” Mumina Isse said.
“We want to facilitate information and links that support successful settlement.
