Police would like to remind residents to be vigilant regarding organisations who ‘door knock’ for donations.
Whilst there are organisations who legitimately conduct this business and do so lawfully, police have recently received reports of a man using this method in an attempt to steal ‘within reach’ items in the Moorooka area.
In one instance, the man requested a drink of water and as the owner left to organise this, the man stole a handbag which was within reach before running off.
Police have received a further report of a man collecting donations for the same organisation and requesting drinks of water from home owners.
Police offer the following advice:
Ensure the door knocker has appropriate identification/name tags and if you suspect they are fake – close the door;
Keep distance between yourself and door knocker by remaining behind a closed and locked security screen door/fly screen;
It’s OK to say “no” to requests for water/food. If
