Police urge members in the Chinese community to take extra caution when they use WeChat, which is a Chinese multi-purpose messaging and social media app, especially when searching and meeting new friends in their nearby locations.
Police have received reports that scammers are targeting mostly young males and are engaging them in posting naked photos or videos, sometimes even making false arrangements to meet in person. The victims are then blackmailed by the scammers and threatened that their naked photos or videos will be circulated if they don’t pay money or buy iTunes cards or MOLPoints.
These scams are also known to happen on other social media platforms, such as Facebook and Skype.
Any users on social media platforms should consider to protect their personal identification, contact details and images and take extra caution when meeting new people on any of these platforms.
